What is the Fourth Trimester?

Traditionally defined as the three months following birth, the Fourth Trimester is a time of great physical and emotional change as a mother recovers from birth. Many healthcare professionals now believe the Fourth Trimester to be much longer than three months. It can take some people more than a year to fully heal from the considerable physical, psychological, and emotional impact of birth.

Because so many aspects of Fourth Trimester recovery continue to be discussed behind closed doors, many mothers-to-be aren’t aware that almost everyone bleeds heavily for days, weeks, or even months after giving birth. It is also a little known fact that over 90% of first-time mothers who give birth vaginally will experience tearing, which can range from minor (first degree) to debilitating (fourth degree). We share these facts because being equipped with the knowledge of what postpartum recovery can really look like empowers us to take charge of our own birth recovery.

Society often reinforces the narrative that we need to ‘bounce back’ as quickly as possible after giving birth. This simply isn’t the reality for most people. Nor should it be. We believe in bouncing forward, into your new life with your new baby!

Everyone’s recovery process will look different– some will be shorter and some will be longer. Yet we all deserve to seek the support we need, for as long as we need it, whether that’s physical support such as an ice/heat therapy, emotional support from a mental health professional, or care support from a doula.

How will FourthWear Postpartum Recovery Underwear help me after giving birth?

However you gave birth, you will need time and care as you recover.

OB-GYNs, doulas, and midwives recommend using ice and heat packs to soothe the pain and discomfort associated with childbirth. We can tell you from personal experience that it’s pretty much impossible to keep them in place once you start moving around during your daily activities. We designed our patented FourthWear Postpartum Recovery Underwear to hold an ice/heat pack anywhere in the body of the garment to give you cooling comfort or soothing heat in all of the places most tender and affected by birth. FourthWear can play an essential role in your recovery plan, whether you gave birth vaginally or by caesarean section.

How many pairs of FourthWear Postpartum Recovery Underwear should I get?

We recommended purchasing at least three. That way, you’ll always have a pair on hand while the others are in the laundry.

What is your shipping process and protocol?

We offer free USPS shipping on orders over $75 and orders are typically delivered within standard mail speeds for your area.

Orders are processed within 24 hours of being placed Mon-Friday, except for holidays.

If received after 2p on Friday, or the day before a standard US holiday, the order will be processed the following business day.

Orders ship from Chicago, USA.

Nyssa is not responsible for carrier-related shipping delays and cannot guarantee shipping times.


We currently ship to the USA and the UK, home of one of our founders. We are unfortunately unable to offer shipping for International orders other than the UK at this time. We hope to be able to ship more broadly when shipping prices become less volatile.

That said, we would love to accommodate in any way possible when able, please connect hello@nyssacare.comfor special requests. We are working towards an solution to be able to restore our international shipping service, so stay tuned.

Which products are eligible for return/exchange (U.S.)?

We cannot accept returns on ice/heat packs or underwear for everyone's health and safety.

We’re happy to accept returns on all other products, in their original and unopened packaging, within 30 days of purchase. Reimbursement will initiate after the return is received.

Please note: for all U.S. orders, original shipping and handling charges are not refundable. However, if your item qualifies for return, the return shipping is on us!

What if I need a different size than what I ordered?

We want you to have the perfect fit. Nyssa will accommodate size exchanges for all apparel items including underwear. Please reach out to us through our customer service portal, at hello@nyssacare.com, or contact us through chat.

Which products are eligible for return/exchange (International)?

Unfortunately we are not able to offer returns or exchanges on International purchases at this time.
If you are unhappy with your purchase, please contact us at hello@nyssacare.com and we will work with you to find a solution.

Can I use my FSA or HSA account dollars to purchase Nyssa products?

Good news! Our FourthWear Postpartum Recovery Underwear and Bralette, VieWear Period Comfort Underwear, and all of our Care items (such as ice/heat packs and pads) may be eligible for payment or reimbursement by your Flexible Spending Arrangement (FSA), Health Savings Account (HSA), and Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) accounts. (Coverage dependent upon individual plan terms).

You may be able to purchase directly at checkout using your FSA, HSA or HRA credit/debit cards. If you experience any issues, then please contact your plan administrator to authorize a purchase on our site. If you prefer to checkout using another method, some plans allow you to apply for reimbursement. Your plan may require you fill out a claim form with an itemized receipt, so please keep your order confirmation email and any packing slips handy.

Paypal, Afterpay, and orders processed in currencies other than USD are not eligible.
