We speak with professors and researchers Bethany Johnson and Margaret Quinlan, authors of the You’re Doing It Wrong: Mothering, Media and Medical Expertise about the intersection of media and motherhood in our current age and beyond.
Their book offers a deep-dive into the storied history of mothering advice in media— from the newspapers, magazines, doctors’ records and personal papers of the 19th century to today’s websites, Facebook groups and Instagram feeds.
We talk about gatekeepers of information in the age of social media, the dynamics between lay and technical expertise in the digital space, and how to handle those ubiquitous 3am Facebook group posts about random rashes :)
